Oct 8, 2011

We left Durant Island and traveled down the Alligator River Canal. The canal is a man made cut that is 22miles long and dead straight. Deason got to man the helm for a while, which made him happy, but there wasn't much to look at except some trees.
We anchored in Belhaven, NC, which is where we anchored last year. We got there around 4pm and had to get to shore to get groceries. The town consisted of a few stores, (cafe, drug store, real estate office) and they all happened to be closed before 5pm on a Saturday....hmmm! They also had a combo police/museum/town hall in one small building. That's about it. The walk to the grocery store was listed as being only a mile away, but since we forgot how to follow directions it turned out to be much longer! We ended up in a residential area at least a mile in the wrong direction. As we were walking we were all being accosted by thousands of mosquitoes (without exaggeration). The five of us must have looked completely ridiculous swatting at ourselves and walking at an accelerated pace with a stroller and shopping cart in tow, not to mention that we were definitely the minority in that area. A local man who was sitting at his house when we walked by, actually got in his car to come and ask us if we wanted a ride. He drove up and said "y'all must be yachters"....I guess we stood out! Normally we wouldn't have accepted a ride, but we were desperate, and getting eaten alive. He was kind enough to offer to stay while we shopped and give us a ride back once we were done. We didn't accept that offer, although we should have. We at least were able to get some bug repellent with a lot of DEET to help us on our walk back.
While our opinion of Belhaven wasn't that high due to their bug problem, the people of the town definitely helped redeem it!
