We left Niantic today at 9:30. It was forecast for 10-15 knot winds so we decided to put up our main sail straight away. It helped a little, but we ended up motor-sailing the whole way due to the wind barely blowing greater than 8 knots.
It was sunny and warm (finally) and the water was pretty flat for our trip across the sound. We even tried to trawl a fishing line to see if we could catch dinner, but we failed in our fishing attempt. We need a little more knowledge. We have a trawling rod, but it needs line and we didn't have the right tackle out, but Dahlia had fun trying with what we had anyway.
We got to Port Jefferson and got the anchor set by 5:30, and Deason was kayaking by 5:35. The harbor is surrounded by amazing houses on high cliffs, and clean beaches, and it is large enough that you would probably never have to worry about finding room to anchor. The large car ferries that run through here can't even take away from how great an anchorage it is.
We also got to use our early Christmas present from Chris's parents. They gave us an ICOM718 HF radio and tuner, and Chris's Dad made us 20 meter and 40 meter antennas that we can hoist up with our gennaker halyard. We were able to contact him tonight on our first attempt at setting everything up, and he sounded just like he was sitting with us. It is comforting to know that if we are way off shore we can still contact people on land. Thank you Nana + Grampa for the great gift!
